In the midst of Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis, a notable trend has emerged where individuals are converting their homes into guesthouses or Airbnb properties. This movement, especially prominent in Beirut, coastal cities, and villages, is reshaping both the tourism industry and local architectural practices. These guesthouses, typically family-owned and operated, offer more than just accommodation—they provide guests with an immersive experience that fosters personal connections. Visitors have the opportunity to engage in local traditions, taste authentic cuisine, and partake in activities that highlight the region’s cultural heritage. The focus is on creating a “home-away-from-home” atmosphere with personalized service and meaningful interactions between hosts and guests.
The Lebanese Ministry of Tourism has established specific regulations for guesthouses, including the requirement that they be owner-operated and limited to 11 rooms. This course will explore the evolving guesthouse trend by focusing on the adaptive reuse of a contemporary building in Downtown Beirut. One example is the Dr. Jamil Kanaan Building, a 1939 structure in Minet El Hosn known for its unique cylindrical shape and elegant interiors. Students will study how to creatively reuse a unit within this building, drawing inspiration from three design precedents. The goal is to develop a concept that reimagines the space, incorporating modern guesthouse features while respecting the building’s original architecture.
