INTERPRETATIVE SPACES
This studio consists of 2 independent exercises based on precedents analysis, addressing each fundamental principles of interior design and shedding the light on major theoretical frameworks that shaped the discipline.
The first exercise focuses on a small-scale implementation of a precedent project
Based on the work of a particular architect/designer, the students will be asked to translate their research into a small-scale live/work space within a set volume of space. The student will be designing both the envelope and the interior of the project translating the essence of their precedent into the new design.
The students are expected to strengthen and enrich their learning outcomes from the previous studios in these exercises namely their understanding of the human scale, the relationship of various objects and architectural elements to one another and the qualities of the resulting spaces.
The second exercise tackles a small-scale intervention on campus.
The first part of this exercise consists of the analysis of a precedent project and a visit to the site on campus.
The precedent is a project that is located in town and that the students will be able to visit and assess its qualities of spaces and potentially spend a full day/night in it. In their analysis of the precedent, the students will be asked to shed the light on consideration such as balance, alignment, contrast, emphasis, repetition and proportions in interior spaces and emphasize the user experience and movement within the interior space will also be addressed triggering a discussion about the sequencing of spaces, the threshold space, the quality of light, the views and the dialogue between indoor and outdoor spaces. In addition to the precedent analysis, the students will visit the site on campus and will make a quick proposal for a new organization of space and functions along a main corridor in one of the office buildings.
