A RECREATIONAL SPACE / STUDENT HUB  ON CAMPUS

A recreational space on campus

The first exercise focuses on a small-scale intervention on Campus based on the work of a particular architect/designer, the students will be asked to revisit a designated space on campus.
The students will first conduct a general research about their designated architect/designer. They will then choose a place/room in a particular project and draw it at scale 1/20 depicting both its physical and perceptual attributes. The envelop, the openings, the furniture, the empty spaces and the coordination between these elements will be carefully represented as well as the quality of the space, mood and atmosphere.
The students will visit two buildings on campus and will be assigned to revisit a sequence of spaces in one of the buildings based on concepts and principles they would have explored in phase I of this exercise. The students can choose to develop an existing function or propose a new one to enhance the experience of the visitors and users of the floor. The dialogue between the sequence of spaces and between the interior and the exterior will be at the heart of this project.

The final project tackles a medium scale project and a particular program.
The first part consists of the analysis of a canonical project addressing fundamental principles of design and shedding the light on consideration such as balance, alignment, contrast, emphasis, repetition and proportions in interior spaces. An emphasis the user experience and movement within the interior space will also be addressed triggering a discussion about the sequencing of spaces, the threshold space, the quality of light, the views and the dialogue between indoor and outdoor spaces.
This project is a design application of the learning outcomes from the precedent analysis. Based on their analysis, the students will design for a particular program on a chosen site in the city. They will propose indoor as well as outdoor spaces within the constraints of a larger envelop set by the instructor.
The interplay between the program components, the mass and void and the relation between indoor and outdoor spaces will be at the heart of the interior design of the project.
