FRACTURED CITIES

Can a boundary, instead of separating communities, bring them together?
What if Bourj Hammoud’s craftsmanship and Mar Mikhael’s education converged above Beirut River to revitalize the area?
By exposing the craftsmanship of BH, the sector will improve, encouraging globalization, and connecting the craftsmen of BH with international clients.
The bridge will address Bourj Hammoud’s administrative needs, serving as an Exchange/Repair Hub where experts coordinate object repairs with BH craftsmen, and sell unwanted items in its retail space.
The design of the bridge incorporates historical elements from Nahr Beirut, with varying forms, scales, and heights to suit the context. Sustainability is a key consideration, achieved through thoughtful architectural design rather than relying on advanced technologies. The facades of the bridge units feature a combination of wooden plates, openings for ventilation, and glass to balance privacy, energy efficiency, and connectivity. Overall, the proposal aims to not only bridge the physical gap but also foster economic growth and cultural exchange between the two communities.
