CULINARY HUB

The Culinary Hub of Nakanojo is an adaptive reuse project located next to the Shima River with the intention of turning an old, abandoned school into the center of the town of Nakanojo, which is 2 hours away from Tokyo. The architectural process consists of carving out the old school by keeping the structure and the main circula-tion, whilst adding the lines of the area to transform the project into a machine. The new proposed program is divided into two main schemes: a culinary school and a food market. The merging of these two ideas allows us to come up with “The Culinary Hub of Nakanojo”. The mar-ket food program consists of a harvesting process to help the town and collaborate with the locals by collecting all the raw materials available as the agricultural lands and activities are reasonably high in this area and therefore having a market to assemble all those raw materials will benefit the town economically and boosting its touristic aspect as its architectural language is reviving the town of Nakanojo. Moreover, the culinary school program, consists of a set of classrooms through different types of units taking us through all the phases of harvesting the raw material and getting them ready for the market. These two schemes compliments one another, enhanc-ing and reviving the culture of the town, where chefs, students and the public interact with each other, through the open market and classroom units.
