alec jil agopian
Ancient Latvian paganism believed in the existence of powerful deities which represented all aspects of life starting from birth and until the afterlife. The columbarium builds upon the already existing rich culture and traditions surrounding death in Latvia, and merges it with the much older pagan beliefs. By finding connections between activities currently performed in Latvian cemeteries such as spending time in nature, praying, tending to graves, and cleaning; the project merges these with, and assigns the appropriate pagan deity to symbolize each performed activity. The end result is a rich program which guides the individual through the different stages of life, reminding them of their ancient roots and connections to nature, and helps them come to terms with the loss they have experienced. The program consists of three main functions: Meditation, Funeral Hall, Niches.
