VISUAL CONTROL

Moller House by Adolf Loos captures the concept of the Raumplan as a system to articulate interior spaces. The complex circulation, the manipulation of vertical planes along with the presence of spatial thresholds creates an inventive spatial labyrinth that provokes a visual continuity through the house. This private shelter also gives the lady of the house an ultimate position as a voyeur and the ability to have visual control without being recognized.
Inspired by the Raumplan, this house accommodates for a hairdresser and her infant. The design allows for a home attached to a salon space that acts as an extension of the piazza. Despite the clear division between home and work spaces, the house’s configuration enables the Hairdresser’s role as an observer who is always in visual control over all corners in both spaces; peeking through permits the mother a check for her child’s state at all times.
