In light of the neglect of Lebanon’s agro-industrial sector, and our education system’s failure in responding to real world demands in times of crisis, my project proposes to think between architecture, agriculture and education to propose new models for self-sustenance. Intervening on a large swath of land wedged between the Lebanese University’s Hadath campus and the Old Saida Road, in Choueifat, the project unfolds as a connective platform defining agricultural lands acting as extroverted courtyards with the surrounding neighborhoods. The platform formulates an open piazza underneath it, housing market spaces as well as play, study and reading areas for school and university students. In parallel, the platform acts as an infrastructural spine, collecting rainwater, capturing solar energy and accommodating for experimentation with hydroponic techniques. Wedged at the interface between the piazza and agricultural fields, production, residential and educational buildings work with the steep topography to create dynamic connections between levels.
