HIDDEN DEPTH

Furn el Chebbak is an assembly of situations that enhances interaction between the citizens.
This interaction in the in-between, through the porous facades of buildings creates a strong rapport between the users by diluting the boundaries between public and private, blending interactions into the background of their everyday lives. Housing domestic workers unable to go to their country of origin, the project created non-invasive interaction with the outside and the interiors generated privacy as much as openness. The site had an existing traditional house and was used as a base for the project as a cooking school through which they could express and share their culture.  Furthermore, the spaces were organized around systems of in-between circulation, slightly visible from the outside. One moves from the street to the private rooms through strategically layered walls, introverted space towards an atrium, and openings on outer facades that stimulate interest points for bystanders.
