ARCHITECTURAL VIRTUALITIES – THE NON PLACE

reem ibrahim

The speed we live in has reshaped our lives and added multiple invisible and complex layers that redefined our physical realities. In his writings, Paul Virilio explores the effect of speed and virtuality on cities and urban life. The virtual or non-place realm of highways is first explored, from the airport to the port, from one dromosphere node to the other, with a focus on speed, morphologies, typologies, public spaces and collective areas. Through this research and its results, the cola area was chosen to be added as a node to the dromosphere. However, that node’s virtual typology will be a new one created from the findings of the typologies explored in such a way as to create Virilio’s and Auge’s realms while integrating my project into its context with strong connections. The project, a hub that houses both a transportation and a digital hub, merges into the city’s infrastructure serving the city and the direct context through its functions. The project acts as a node in the city that is a merging of auges non places and virilios digital ideas where the infrastructure is the exploration of where the non places meet the places and how the functions of those spaces can cater to the needs of the context and the city.
