BENACERRAF HOUSE ADDITION, MICHAEL GRAVES – A HOUSE FOR A GLASS-BLOWER

nour el natour

In drawing and partial models, the Benacerraf house pavilion was broken down into four parts, the pedestal and columns as base, the white screen walls creating exterior spaces, the inner volume and the light additive elements. These parts were reconstructed and reassembled resulting in a new architecture that suggests countless possibilities.
This ephemerality became the main concept taken into project 2 – the design of a house for a glass-blower. The house includes four moving planes whose intention is creating spaces that in the interior are ephemeral and on the exterior communicate with the piazza and adjacent street. One example is in the event of a glass exhibition. The workshop and gallery that are accessible from the piazza, are separated by one of the four planes, the plane slides out to the piazza as a directional wall marking the entrance to the gallery that is now open to the workshop.
