In the ever-evolving urban landscapes of today, neighborhoods in decay pose significant challenges. However, amidst this urban decay lies a hidden treasure: old public souks. So, how can the remains of Bachoura’s markets, alongside its socioeconomic issues drive urban regeneration?
There are numerous layers pertaining to Bachoura: The Souks, the Basta Bridge, and the alerting concern of tenant displacement – affecting both market shop tenants and residents.Consequently, the project is a new market/housing model that functions upon a profit-sharing socioeconomic system between landlords, shops, and residents. It features three structures distributed across a well-connected block, forming a promenade that guides movement from one to the next. The project also embraces sustainability by reviving the overlooked under bridge area and incorporating different passive strategies such as: a wind tower, courtyards, and double-skin perforated facades. In brief, the intervention serves as a catalyst that fosters economic growth, community bonding, and efficiency.
