BOTANICAL BOUNDARIES: FRAMEWORK OF ARCHITECTURE

My project, An Irish Embassy in Morocco, stands as a beacon of cultural symbiosis and historical resilience, reflecting the intertwined cultures of Ireland and Morocco. Both nations, shaped by the enduring impacts of colonization, have developed unique ways to internalize and celebrate their communal spaces and gardens. This shared heritage of introspective yet vibrant communal areas form the backbone of the embassy’s design concept, where nature is not merely an adjunct but the very essence of architecture.
Delving into extensive research and precedent analysis, I envisioned an embassy where the boundaries between interior and exterior blur seamlessly. The design begins with interior green spaces that gradually break free, merging with the exterior environment in a dynamic and organic fashion. This core concept celebrates nature’s ability to transcend and transform built spaces, creating an environment that feels both intimate and expansive. The embassy’s layout harmoniously balances enclosed, private spaces with open, communal areas. Public gardens flow effortlessly into exhibition spaces and theatres, bringing the rich tapestry of Irish culture to life in a setting that encourages interaction and engagement. As visitors ascend through the building, green terraces infiltrate the private areas, offering tranquil views and fostering a sense of openness and connection with nature.
The uppermost floor, a private area for the ambassador, is surrounded by expansive terraces that offer panoramic views of the entire project. The materiality of the embassy further underscores this cultural fusion, employing traditional Irish stone alongside modern Moroccan elements like concrete and wooden columns. The Irish Embassy in Morocco is more than a building; it is a celebration of cultural exchange and mutual understanding. By embracing nature as a living, breathing part of the architecture, the design fosters a unique dialogue between the indoor and outdoor spaces, symbolizing the convergence of Irish and Moroccan traditions. This vibrant, innovative space bridges continents and cultures, offering a profound and inspiring testament to the enduring connections between Ireland and Morocco.
