BEYOND THE WALLS

In the urban fabric of Furn el Chebbak, unplanned alleyways weave between private homes, defying the rigid lines drawn by walls, echoing a neighborhood that tests its boundaries “outside itself.” These walls, once resolute dividers, transform into thresholds, blurring the lines between “in” and “out” – a testament to the shared experiences as memories that spill from the intimate spaces within these small houses. Analyzing the Halen housing project by Atelier 5 solidified this concept, where separation fostered a sense of community. This interplay between public and private realms resonates with the project, where planned pathways lead residents towards a central communal space. Inspired by both Halen’s pathways and Furn el Chebbak’s spirit of connection, my design echoes this harmony, by placing units on the existing building site, with a network of courtyards, each one flowing outward towards the central communal garden, enhancing a sense of both privacy and connection, and shaping a tangible link between past and present.
