LINKING ARCHAEOLOGY AND URBAN LIFE

pascale maalouf

This project seeks to revive the visitor-citizen relationship by connecting Baalbek’s archaeological sites to bustling city. Three key lines within the site guide the project’s form, acting as a porous wall connecting outsiders to the city’s main hubs. This multifunctional line caters to archaeologists, researchers, performers, traders, and tourists, facilitating interactions with residents. Its form derives from its urban context by extending the existing souk, mirroring the temple’s orientation and aligning with important perspectives. It connects city elevations to archaeological zones, accommodates outsiders and propel them to engage in urban activities. The archeological lab is architecturally serving the extraction and research process of the ruins. The library doubles as a public portico and a reading area overlooking ruins, while the theater’s roof becomes an amphitheater with temple views. Important passages imprint themselves through openings and pores in the wall. The project then harmoniously blends and define all urban components to the visitors.
