KAWALEES

The design approach is meant to tackle two aspects of the Lebanese crisis: the cultural aspect, more specifically the regression of theater; and the social aspect, namely the fact that most people can no longer afford to attend such cultural events. The idea behind KAWALEES, is to offer an experience where people can stay, walk, socialize, all while being immersed in an informal theater.
Upon studying the site which is located at a node in Corniche Al Nahr, I addressed the urban layer by creating a transversal axis which connects the highway from either side for pedestrian use. This added porosity to the façade allows now pedestrians to cross the site therefore making the project an urban hub. The design strategy started by addressing the challenges of the building namely the overwhelming use of vertical columns, and analyzing the basic components of a traditional theater, specifically the stage and the backstage. Two vertical volumetric bodies, referred to as backstages are the driving force of the space, as they articulate most functions around them. The two structures carry three informal stages that act as a performing/socializing platform. Those vertical volumes also carry the entirety of the vertical circulation: they are not simple “backstages” they are buildings within the building, and they create unexpected visual connectivity in the space.
