BREAKING THE STIGMA

Drug and alcohol abuse is spreading more, especially in areas that are considered poor, as a way to cope with difficulties. The objective of the project is to design a rehabilitation center that breaks the stigma around the treatment by creating a sort of connection between the patients and society. Through the use of architectural design, the project aims to create an environment that increases the satisfaction of the patients and reduces their anxiety. Some of the implementations are: Minimizing the institutionalized appearance, featuring areas where patients can interact with society, integrating natural daylight in the design, featuring sports to reduce anxiety, implementing spirituality as a part of the healing process, using natural elements and greenery, dividing patients’ rooms into smaller sections to avoid incidents of violence. The main organizational element of the building is the circulation which creates a sort of datum that serves as a reference for the volumetric composition. The courtyard is not only an exterior private space but acts as a light shaft, especially for the rooms that don’t receive daylight because of the topography of the site.
