RUINS OF THE FUTURE

betty razzouk

It has finally left. It went on to its next planet, leaving us in its ashes, in its ruins, to try and pick up the pieces of the destroyed world. Its followers still remain, scouring the earth for more victims, too weak to see in the dark preying on anyone or anything under the sun. In the shadows we remain, trying to rebuild a life for ourselves. We may never return to normalcy, but at least we’ll survive, surviving by the skin of our teeth, but survival non-the-less.
It has finally passed. It has become a thing of the past. No more hiding and cowering away, now we bask in the sun, grateful for each moment It has been like this since we discovered it It’s a house, we think. Underground, thick cement walls, and metallic extensions that once served a function It was used to keep someone safe, deep in the dark, below us all Once it was necessary for survival, but today we get to visit it. We get to observe, to learn, and then to leave. Even that we now recognize as a privilege.
